4. First Aid Measures
- Ingestion
- After inhalation: fresh air. Immediately call in physician. If breathing stops: immediately apply artificial respiration, if necessary also oxygen.
- Inhalation
- If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Remove from exposure, lie down. Donot usemouth-to-mouth method if victim ingested or inhaled the substance; give artificial respirationwith the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratorymedical device. Call a physician immediately.
- Skin Contact
- In case of skin contact: Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/ shower. Consult a physician.
- Eye Contact
- Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.
- Immediate medical attention is required.
- Other Information
- Show this material safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.
- Symptoms of poisoning may even occur after several hours; therefore medical observation for at least 48 hours after the accident.
- Causes burns by all exposure routes. May cause allergic skin reaction. Symptoms of allergic reaction may include rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing, tinglingof thehandsand feet, dizziness, lightheadedness, chest pain, muscle pain or flushing: Ingestionmaycause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea: Product is a corrosivematerial. Use of gastric lavage or emesis is contraindicated. Possible perforation of stomach or esophagus should be investigated: Ingestion causes severe swelling, severedamage to the delicate tissue and danger of perforation.
5. Firefighting Measures
Suitable extinguishing equipment
- Fire
- CO₂, extinguishing powder or water spray. Fight larger fires with water spray or alcohol resistant foam.
- HAZCHEM
- Not available.
Special protective equipment and precautions for fire fighters
As in any fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent) and full protective gear. Thermal decomposition can lead to release of irritating gases and vapours.
6. Accidental Release Measures
- Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
- Ensure adequate ventilation. Use personal protective equipment as required. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Keeppeopleawayfrom and upwind of spill/leak.
- Environmental precautions
- Dilute with plenty of water.
- Do not allow to enter sewers/ surface or ground water.
- Methods and materials for containment and clean up
- Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust). Cover drains. Collect, bind, and pump off spills.
- Dispose contaminated material as waste according to item 13.
- Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Protective Action Criteria for Chemicals
- PAC-1: Paraformaldehyde 2 mg/m³
- PAC-2: Paraformaldehyde 23 mg/m³
- PAC-3: Paraformaldehyde 47 mg/m³
7. Handling and Storage
- Precautions for safe handling
- Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace.
- Open and handle receptacle with care.
- Prevent formation of aerosols.
- Conditions for safe storage
- Requirements to be met by storerooms and receptacles: No special requirements.
- Information about storage in one common storage facility: Not required.
- Further information about storage conditions: None.

8. Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
Exposure Standards
| Material | TWA ppm | TWA mg/m³ | STEL ppm | STEL mg/m³ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Formaldehyde | 2 ppm | 2.5 mg/m3 | 2 ppm | 2.5 mg/m3 |
- Engineering controls
- Ensure that eyewash stations and safety showers are close to the workstation location. Wherever possible, engineering control measures such as the isolation or enclosure of the process, the introduction of processorequipment changes to minimise release or contact, and the use of properly designed ventilation systems, should be adoptedtocontrol hazardous materials at source
Personal protective equipment
- Eye and face protection
- Wear tightly sealed goggles.
- Avoid contact with the eyes and skin.
- Skin protection
- Protective gloves
- The glove material has to be impermeable and resistant to the product/ the substance/ the preparation.
- Due to missing tests no recommendation to the glove material can be given for the product/ the preparation/ the
- chemical mixture.
- Selection of the glove material on consideration of the penetration times, rates of diffusion and the degradation
- Material of gloves
- The selection of the suitable gloves does not only depend on the material, but also on further marks of quality and
- varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. As the product is a preparation of several substances, the resistance of
- the glove material can not be calculated in advance and has therefore to be checked prior to the application.
- Body protection
- General protective and hygienic measures:
- Keep away from foodstuffs, beverages and feed.Immediately remove all soiled and contaminated clothing.
- Wash hands before breaks and at the end of work.
- Store protective clothing separately.
- Avoid contact with the eyes and skin.
- Respiratory protection
- In case of brief exposure or low pollution use respiratory filter device. In case of intensive or longer exposure use self-contained respiratory protective device.
